Tour Coach: Rainy Day Driving

Insight St.6: The oppressive heat of the first few days of racing, left today, and in its wake: rain. Racing in the rain opens an entirely different dynamic to a bike race, and at the most basic level, changes how you ride and drive your bike. Chris Carmichael looks a bit closer at the unique requirements of rainy day bike racing.

Tom Boonen just can’t catch a break. The former World Champion and green jersey winner, the guy who just won the Belgian National Championship the week before the Tour de France, has yet to factor into a single stage finish. In Stage 2 he was forced off course by a crash about 700 meters from the line. The next day he didn’t make the front group when Columbia-HTC split the field in heavy crosswinds, and hence missed out on the sprint finish. During Stage 5, he suffered a flat tire just as the pack was splitting up in strong crosswinds, rode his way back into the peloton, and then promptly flatted again. Although he managed to get back in the field, he was not a factor in the sprint for third place (behind stage winner Thomas Voekler and one more surviving breakaway rider). So today, on the sixth stage of the 2009 Tour de France, perhaps it would be his lucky day. But not so much. This time he ended up crashing on the wet and slippery streets of Barcelona, Spain a few kilometers from the finish.



Rain always wreaks havoc on the peloton, but one of the worst scenarios is a combination of rain and city streets. Given the same rain conditions, racing through the countryside on wet roads is almost always safer than racing through a big city. With the increased car traffic on urban roads there’s more oil on the surface of the street. It’s been hot and dry in Barcelona for the past several days, so there’s been plenty of time for oil to build up, too. And when it rained today, it wasn’t a flooding downpour that was strong enough to significantly wash away the oil, so it stayed on top of the water and made the roads incredibly slippery.

Urban areas also have a lot more paint on the roads (cross-walks, directional arrows, lane lines, etc.) and a lot more manhole covers. When you put oily water on top of road paint or steel, the result is a surface that’s as slippery as ice. The crashes we saw in roundabouts on the way into Barcelona today (like the one that sent Garmin-Slipstream’s Tyler Farrar over a barrier and injured Columbia HTC’s Michael Rogers) were likely the result of the oily water on top of the pavement. The later crashes in town, though, including the one that took Boonen out of contention for the stage win, appeared to be caused by road paint.

In any situation where you know your traction will be compromised, there are three primary ways to improve your chances of staying upright: adjust your speed, keep the bike upright, and stay off the brakes. Ideally, avoiding road paint is your best bet, but while racing in a pack that’s not always realistic. When you have to cross the paint or the manhole covers, you want your bike to be as upright as possible instead of being leaned over. As you lean into a corner, you’re relying on the friction between your tire and the road to keep your wheels from sliding out. Rain, paint, and/or metal reduce that friction and put you in a situation where just a little bit of sideways force will be enough to break your tires loose. Keeping the bike more upright keeps your center of gravity closer to the midline of your bike, which helps to maximize your traction in slippery conditions.

However, even with your bike more upright, there’s still less traction on slippery roads and road paint. High-speed cornering is entirely dependent on your tires staying in contact with the road, so it stands to reason that reduced traction puts a limit on how fast you can go through a corner without falling. But adjusting your speed in order to make it safely through a corner can cause just as much trouble as the corner itself. Your wheels are much quicker to lock up and slide when the roads are wet or if you’re riding over paint. One of the worst situations for racers is to be in the middle of the pack, braking before a corner on black pavement, and then rolling onto a painted crosswalk while you’re still on the brakes. In an instant, and owing only the change in the surface below your tires, your wheels lock up and you’re sliding. If you’re lucky, you can keep it upright long enough to get back onto black pavement and regain control. If you’re unlucky, you’re on the ground before you know what happened.

If you see the scenario above developing in front of you, the best thing you can try to do is change your line slightly so you can cross the paint while still going straight, and release your brakes just before you hit the paint. This will help keep your tires rolling over the paint instead of sliding. The risky part of this technique is that if you failed to control your speed adequately before reaching the paint, and then you release the brakes to roll across it, you may then have to brake hard as soon as you get back onto black pavement. The problem is, that pavement is wet too, and hard braking may be enough to cause you to slide anyway.


With so many riders doing their best to either hold or advance position, it's no wonder that wet roads can wreak havoc.

At the end of the day, staying upright in the rain takes a combination of luck and practice. Like everyone else, I’d rather ride in warm sun than cold rain, but it’s important to realize that there are benefits to occasionally getting caught in the rain – or even starting out in the rain. Training in the rain allows you to be conservative with your speed at first and then gain the confidence to start going faster. It helps to teach you how differently your brakes work when your wheels and brake pads are wet. For racers, it’s crucial to be comfortable and confident in the rain, because nervousness leads to a tight grip on the bars and tension in your arms and shoulders. In slippery conditions, that makes it even more likely that you’re going to hit the deck.

With the possible exception of Tom Boonen, it doesn’t appear that the rain significantly impacted the actual finishing order of Stage 6 of the 2009 Tour de France. With the help of a gradual climb over the final 1-2 kilometers of the stage, Cervelo’s Thor Hushovd finally got the better of Columbia-HTC’s Mark Cavendish. The climb was also good for keeping the riders safe because the speeds were lower than they would have been in the final two kilometers of a flat run-in to the finish. Lance Armstrong and all the yellow jersey contenders finished in the main peloton, and now they’re looking forward to tomorrow’s first rendezvous with the mountains.

Tour Coach: Crosswinds 101

Insight St.5: I miss a lot of things about being a professional cyclist, but fighting for position in ripping crosswinds is not one of them. Watching the peloton fracture into several echelons in the final hour or so of Stage 5 brought back painful memories of hours spent flirting with disaster in the gutters of European roads.

Riding well in an echelon is one of the fine arts of cycling. It’s not something you necessarily learn right away as a novice; it’s an advanced skill, and sign to other riders that you’re experienced.

Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time teaching cyclists to form and ride in echelons, and once you know how to do it right, and once you experience the benefits of these diagonal pacelines, you’ll suddenly become that guy – or gal – on the ride who organizes the group into an echelon whenever you feel the wind blowing in from the side.

Echelon Basics
The principle of an echelon is based on the fact that when the wind is coming at you from the side, the best place to get a draft from the rider ahead of you is diagonally behind him on the leeward side (away from the wind). This means that if the wind is blowing from the left, you want to ride on the right side of the person in front of you. Exactly where you line up next to him – whether your handlebars are even with his shoulders, behind his hips, or anywhere in between – depends on the angle of the wind.


Best place to be in the crosswinds? The break isn't a bad place to be - you don't have to be worried about being guttered there.

To rotate in an echelon, the leading rider takes a pull while other riders line up diagonally behind him on his leeward side. Depending on the width of the road, that could mean 4 riders or 15 or more. When he’s done with his pull, he simply slows down and initially goes straight backward. The entire line of riders who were to his right (assuming the wind is from the left) shift left, leaving a space on the leeward side of the road for a rider in the recovery line to move forward and into the leading line. The rider who just pulled off starts moving diagonally across the road behind the leading line of riders until it’s his turn to move forward again.

The Challenges Of Riding In An Echelon
One of the challenging aspects of riding in an echelon is that the crosswind makes it difficult to hold a straight line as you head down the road. A gust of wind hits the group and someone in the line gets pushed a few inches to the side. This often leads to chain reaction because riders are lined up with their handlebars very close to the hip of the rider ahead of them. You’re overlapped in order to hide from the wind, but that also means that in order to protect your front wheel, you’re going wherever the guy ahead of you goes. For this reason, riding in an echelon can be nerve-wracking on top of being physically difficult.

Changes in the width of the road also present serious challenges for the riders in an echelon. In a normal paceline through a headwind or tailwind, the width of the road doesn’t affect the number of riders who can benefit from the draft. But in a diagonal paceline, the width of the road dictates the number of riders who can hide from the wind. If you’re in a perfect echelon on a wide road, where everyone is getting a good draft, and then the road suddenly narrows, the riders who were on the leeward side get stuck riding in a straight line behind the echelon.

That’s what’s referred to as “riding in the gutter”, because you’re literally as far over on the pavement as you can get, but whether there’s two of you or 10 of you in the gutter, no one is getting a draft. That’s why it’s important to keep looking as far ahead of you as possible, so that when you see that the road is going to get narrower, you can move yourself forward in the group so you’re still in the echelon when you get to that narrower section of road.

Using Echelons To Your Advantage
Echelons can be used for offensive and defensive purposes in a bike race. When you hit a crosswind, you can drive the pace and purposely limit the maximum width of the echelon to put the majority of the peloton into the gutter. That’s what Columbia-HTC did yesterday in Stage 4. Although the road was wide enough for 15-20 riders to line up diagonally, they put their leading rider only out far enough to allow about 7-10 riders to line up between him and the gutter.

If you’re in a small team in a local race, you might establish an echelon that only contains your four riders and half the width of a single lane. You put everyone else in a long straight line in the gutter, go as hard as you can, and watch the pack split into pieces.

Once the peloton starts breaking apart, you can continue using echelons to make sure the race doesn’t come back together. The first echelon on the road almost always contains the strongest riders in the race, and as a result, once gaps start appearing between groups, the superior horsepower of the leading group allows it to pull away from the riders behind. If you get organized quickly and drive the pace, you can open up a race-winning gap.

But just as echelons can be used to rip a race to pieces, they can also be used to bring it back together. Knowing that only a given number of riders can make it into the leading echelon, it’s imperative to recognize when you’re not going to be one of them. If you’re too far back in the pack to make the first echelon, the smartest thing you can do is move out to the windward side of the road and establish a second echelon as soon as you can.

This is where most amateur racers make big mistakes. They struggle in the gutter for far too long, searching for a non-existent draft on the very edge of the road. Eventually someone in that line loses contact with the wheel ahead of him and a gap quickly forms. But because everyone’s been fighting through the wind, no one in that long line is fresh enough to cover the gap or mount an effective chase, so the gap grows very rapidly.

Forming a second, third, and even fourth echelon as soon as possible is the best strategy for staying in contact with the front group. Even if you’re second echelon is just 50 feet behind the first one, you have to be patient and keep working together in separate echelons until the wind shifts or diminishes and the diagonal pacelines become unnecessary.

In Stage 5, 25mph crosswinds split the pack into several pieces, but echelons quickly formed that allowed the second, third, and fourth groups to stay close enough to the leaders that they could rejoin the main pack once the wind shifted to more of a tailwind. But up ahead, the six-man breakaway group that had been using an echelon and standard paceline to share the work of staying ahead of the peloton continued to press on.

Crosswinds that break the main peloton into echelons make it difficult to organize an effective chase, a problem complicated today by an apparent dispute between sprinters’ teams over whose responsibility it is to do the chasing. In the end, the breakaway stayed clear of the field, and Frenchman Thomas Voeckler finally captured the stage win that’s eluded him for the past six editions of the Tour de France.
